Vadnagar’s Autorickshaws Get Heritage Makeover as Gujarat Links Local Transport With Tourism

Gandhinagar, Aug 11: Vadnagar’s autorickshaws are set to become a moving showcase of the historic town’s cultural heritage under a new initiative aimed at strengthening tourism while creating greater opportunities for local transport operators.

The Vadnagar Heritage Auto Project, being undertaken by Gujarat State Fertilisers & Chemicals Limited (GSFC) through its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiative, will bring more than 300 autorickshaws registered in Vadnagar into the state’s tourism development efforts.

Under the project, each participating autorickshaw will receive a heritage-themed makeover, with more than Rs 50,000 being spent on retrofitting each vehicle. The designs are intended to reflect Vadnagar’s distinctive historical and cultural identity.

The first phase of the initiative has already been completed for 21 autorickshaws, marking the beginning of an effort to give local transport a more recognisable connection with the heritage destination.

The project is being implemented with logistical support from the state Tourism and Transport departments and is aimed at bringing local autorickshaw drivers more closely into Vadnagar’s growing tourism economy.

For visitors, the autorickshaws could offer more than just a means of getting from one attraction to another. With heritage-inspired designs, the vehicles are intended to become part of the overall visitor experience and provide tourists with a distinctive way to explore the historic town.

For local drivers, the initiative provides an opportunity to benefit from increasing tourist activity and participate directly in tourism-related transport services.

Registration for the project is continuing to enable more autorickshaw operators to participate. Drivers interested in having their vehicles redesigned under the initiative can register through the GSFC representative at the Vadnagar ST Depot.

Vadnagar is known for its layered history and archaeological and architectural heritage, including Buddhist monasteries and stupas, temples, fortifications, historic gates and toranas, lakes, wells and traditional houses.

The town also served as an important hinterland trade centre in western India, reflecting its longstanding role in regional commerce and cultural exchange.

Vadnagar was added to UNESCO’s Tentative List of World Heritage Sites in 2022 under the title “Vadnagar – A Multi-layered Historic Town, Gujarat”, highlighting its historical significance.

The Heritage Auto Project seeks to bring this heritage closer to everyday life by taking elements of Vadnagar’s identity beyond monuments and heritage sites and onto the streets.

The initiative also reflects a broader effort to ensure that tourism development creates opportunities for local communities. By involving autorickshaw drivers, the project connects heritage promotion with livelihoods and local economic activity.

As Vadnagar continues to develop as a heritage and cultural tourism destination, the initiative is expected to add a distinctive visual identity to the town while helping local transport operators become an integral part of its tourism story.
