India-Seychelles Partnership Opens New Opportunities in Fisheries and Blue Economy
New Delhi, Aug 26: India and Seychelles are looking to expand cooperation in fisheries, aquaculture and the wider blue economy, with a stronger focus on technology, artificial intelligence, research and sustainable use of marine resources.

The two countries discussed the next phase of their partnership during a high-level meeting in New Delhi on August 25. The talks explored practical areas where cooperation can support economic growth, create employment and strengthen food and nutritional security across the Indian Ocean region.
A major focus was on modernising fisheries through technology and better scientific management. India and Seychelles discussed the possible use of digital data systems, improved monitoring infrastructure and artificial intelligence to support fisheries management and more responsible harvesting.
The two sides also identified several areas for potential collaboration, including tuna fisheries, marine aquaculture, hatchery development, fish-stock assessment, post-harvest technologies and marine conservation.
Strengthening the seafood value chain emerged as another important area. Cooperation in tuna processing, product diversification and better utilisation of fish waste could create opportunities for businesses while reducing losses and supporting more sustainable production.
India shared its experience in developing a large fisheries sector, with national fish production reaching 19.7 million tonnes and seafood exports valued at around $8.46 billion. The country also highlighted its work in sustainable fishing practices, technology-led infrastructure and responsible management of marine resources.
For Seychelles, deeper engagement with India could provide greater access to technical expertise, research facilities, training and modern fisheries technologies. The partnership could also create opportunities for Indian companies and institutions in areas such as aquaculture, seafood processing, marine technology and scientific research.
Both sides agreed on the importance of stronger links between government agencies, research institutions, universities and industry experts. Technical exchanges, training programmes, exposure visits and joint research initiatives are expected to help develop practical solutions for the fisheries sector.
The two countries are also considering a structured annual work programme to maintain momentum and turn areas of cooperation into concrete projects. Regulatory coordination, joint pilot initiatives and improved access to research and laboratory facilities were among the areas discussed.
Seychelles has expressed interest in moving ahead with a dedicated bilateral Memorandum of Understanding on fisheries and aquaculture, supported by a detailed implementation plan.
The expanding cooperation reflects the growing economic importance of the blue economy. For both India and Seychelles, sustainable fisheries can contribute to food security, livelihoods, trade and long-term growth while protecting the health of marine ecosystems.
The partnership is expected to provide a stronger foundation for practical cooperation and new economic opportunities in fisheries, aquaculture and other marine-based industries.
