A Kolkata-based team of women medicos performs successful heart surgery on a 60-year-old woman with 90% artery blockage
It has been a rocky road to recovery for 60-year-old Tulsi Barik, who was experiencing severe chest pain and breathlessness. When her grandson saw a general practitioner, the doctor recommended that she undergo an electrocardiogram. According to the test results, the front artery of Mrs. Barik’s heart was 90% blocked. Fortunately, her grandson sought advice from Ohio Hospital’s Dr. Jayati Rakhit, who advised having it operated on immediately.
“Mrs. Barik arrived at the clinic reporting acute chest pain and shortness of breath. After an angiography that showed 90% blockage in the front artery, abnormalities were detected. It was successfully stented and operated on. Since the entire team, including the patient, cardiologist, and lab personnel, are women, the case was a pioneering one,” stated Dr. Jayati Rakhit following the surgery.
Despite the challenging road, Dr. Jayati and her team persevered and completed the surgery successfully.
“It feels good! Doctors claim that I’m recovering more quickly than I should be, so that’s good. After the procedure, I’ve already started walking,” remarked Mrs. Barik. Her grandson is also satisfied with the overall process and with how affordable it was. He is optimistic for his grandmother’s future because the doctors have stated that she can resume her regular activities in a few months.
