Bahuda Jatra: The Holy Trinity’s Homecoming

15th July 2024: An important part of the yearly Rath Yatra celebration in Puri, Odisha, is the Bahuda Jatra, commonly called the Holy Trinity’s return voyage. This momentous occasion signifies the return of Lord Jagannath to his ancestral home, the Srimandir (Jagannath Temple), from the Gundicha Temple, accompanied by his siblings Lord Balabhadra and Devi Subhadra.

 The Journey from Gundicha to Srimandir

The Bahuda Jatra takes place on the ninth day after the Rath Yatra, which is the day when the deities are taken to the Gundicha Temple. The word “Bahuda” in Odia means “return,” symbolizing the deities’ journey back to their home. This event is celebrated with great enthusiasm and devotion by millions of devotees who gather to witness the divine procession.

 Rituals and Celebrations

On the auspicious day of Bahuda Jatra, the deities are brought out of the Gundicha Temple in a grand procession known as “Pahandi.” This involves the deities being carried on their respective chariots amidst the chanting of hymns, beating of drums, and blowing of conch shells. The atmosphere is filled with spiritual fervor as devotees pull the chariots through the Bada Danda (Grand Road) back to the Srimandir.

One of the unique aspects of Bahuda Jatra is the stop at the Mausi Maa Temple, where the deities are offered Poda Pitha, a special type of pancake believed to be a favorite of Lord Jagannath. This brief halt adds a touch of local tradition and flavor to the grand procession.
