Mumbai paid an emotional tribute to the late ghazal maestro Padma Bhushan Pankaj Udhas as the square opposite Sterling Apartments at Peddar Road was inaugurated as ‘Padma Bhushan Pankaj Udhas Chowk’ on Sunday, commemorating the singer’s 75th birth anniversary.

The inauguration ceremony was led by Maharashtra Skill Development and Entrepreneurship Minister Mangal Prabhat Lodha in the presence of the Udhas family, eminent members of the music fraternity, close friends, dignitaries, and admirers of the legendary singer whose soulful voice helped popularise ghazals across generations. The event witnessed the presence of several notable personalities, including Mr. Neeraj Roy, Founder & CEO, Hungama Digital Media, and renowned singers Sonu Nigam, Udit Narayan, Papon, Hariharan, Salim–Sulaiman.

Fondly known as “The Velvet Voice of India,” Pankaj Udhas was among the pioneers who popularised ghazals in India with timeless romantic classics and soulful renditions that continue to remain etched in public memory. The name of the chowk stands as a lasting tribute to the iconic singer who made Mumbai his home and created an enduring musical legacy.

Speaking at the occasion, Nayaab Udhas, daughter of Pankaj Udhas, said, “This is an incredibly emotional moment for our family. My father shared a very deep bond with Mumbai, and seeing a part of the city forever carry his name is truly special. Many distinguished guests from the world of music and those close to the life and legacy of my father are attending the event today, making this tribute even more meaningful for us.”

The inauguration ceremony was followed by an intimate musical evening celebrating the timeless contribution of Pankaj Udhas to Indian music and ghazals. Family members, close associates, artists, and fans gathered to remember the legendary singer and honour the legacy he leaves behind.

The event marked not just the inauguration of a chowk, but a celebration of the life, music, and everlasting legacy of one of India’s most beloved musical icons.
