Every Dot is the Beginning: Turning Small Ideas into Creative Expressions

A simple dot can be the beginning of an idea, a story, a pattern or even a masterpiece. Bringing this thought to life, Birla Open Minds celebrated International Dot Day 2026 throughout September with the theme “Every Dot is the Beginning”, encouraging students to explore creativity, imagination and self-expression through engaging, hands-on experiences.

Moving beyond conventional art activities, the month-long initiative brought the concept of a dot into art, storytelling, cooking, movement, music, STEAM and collaborative activities. Students participated in experiences such as Dot Trees, Bubble Wrap Dot Flower Gardens, Dot Sun Paintings and Dotty Celebration Cakes, discovering how individual ideas and contributions can come together to create something meaningful.

Yatharth Gautam, Director & Chief Operating Officer, Birla Open Minds, said, “For an education system, creativity is not an isolated skill; it is closely connected to how students observe, question, experiment and respond to the world around them. ‘Every Dot is the Beginning’ creates an opportunity to take this approach beyond the classroom and give students different avenues to express an idea. When art, storytelling, movement and STEAM come together, students are not simply participating in activities; they are developing confidence, collaboration and the ability to turn an initial thought into something tangible.”

The celebration began with “Make Your Mark”, where students and parents collaboratively created a colourful Dot Butterfly, symbolising how every small contribution can create something beautiful. Storytelling sessions featuring The Dot by Peter H. Reynolds further reinforced the message of taking the first step towards creativity.

The initiative also extended creativity into everyday learning. Students created Dot Fruit Biscuits and Dot Pizzas, explored colour recognition and coordination through games such as Polka Dot Jump, Bean Bag Dot Toss and Dot Scavenger Hunt, and developed their own keepsakes through stone painting, dot-decorated tote bags, paper-plate mandalas and tie-dye napkin art.

The learning journey also connected creativity with scientific exploration through STEAM activities such as Swirl Art and Walking Water Rainbow Dots, where students observed colour movement, mixing and patterns while developing curiosity and early scientific thinking. The celebration also included music and movement sessions around The Dot Song, encouraging rhythm, coordination, confidence and self-expression.

Through such experiences, students get the opportunity to explore creativity, imagination and self-expression while developing skills such as collaboration, problem-solving, coordination and confidence. The initiative reinforces the idea that creativity can begin with something as simple as a dot, and with the right environment, every small idea can evolve into a meaningful expression.
