24,000 Reasons to Learn Python: Tech Skills Report Unveils The Most In-Demand Skills in 2024
Finoit, a leading software development company specializing in SaaS and AI solutions, has conducted an extensive analysis of the most in-demand tech skills for 2024. The study, which examined job listings across the United States (U.S.) and the tech skills required for each one, reveals surprising trends in the tech job market and highlights the skills that aspiring tech professionals should focus on.
Mukesh Choudhary, Co-founder and CTO of Finoit, states, “Our research shows that while traditional programming languages remain crucial, there’s a markable shift toward demand for specialized skills like robotics and cloud computing. This presents both opportunities and challenges for job seekers and employers alike.”
The study put together a comprehensive list of IT and tech skills, then searched for job listings across the U.S. with those skills as requirements. Python and SQL tied for the top spot, each with 24,000 job listings. Jobs involving Python, the most common computer programming language, used for data science, machine learning, and web development, commands an average salary of $126,673. SQL skills, essential for database management, bring in an average salary of $92,457.
Interestingly, robotics was revealed to be the fourth most in-demand skill, featured in 15,000 job listings with an average salary of $117,234. The growing focus on automation across most industries is likely responsible for this surge in demand.
Choudhary notes, “Robotics’ high ranking is particularly intriguing. While it’s clear that companies are investing heavily in this area, the broad nature of ‘robotics’ as a skill set may lead to some confusion. Hiring managers and job seekers alike need to be more specific about the exact robotics skills required for each role.”
The study also highlights the continued importance of Linux expertise, which ranked fifth, with 13,000 job listings. Despite a lower average salary of $84,939 compared to other top skills, Linux proficiency remains a valuable asset in the tech industry.
“Linux’s open-source nature and widespread use in server environments make it a must-have skill for many tech roles,” Choudhary explains. “Job seekers who master Linux alongside other in-demand skills will find themselves at a significant advantage in the job market.”
Other key findings from the study include:
- Cloud computing skills remain highly sought after, with AWS and Azure both appearing in the top 10, each offering average salaries exceeding $140,000.
- Traditional programming languages like Java, JavaScript, C#, and C++ continue to be in high demand, all ranking within the top 10.
- Emerging technologies such as blockchain and quantum computing show relatively low demand currently, but this may change as these fields mature.
Notably, some skills that one might expect to see higher in the rankings appear further down the list.
“It’s intriguing to see skills like Git, Docker, and Kubernetes ranking lower than one might expect, given their importance in modern software development practices. Git, for instance, is crucial for version control, yet it ranks 20th with only 5,000 matching job listings. Similarly, Docker and Kubernetes, which are fundamental to containerization and orchestration, rank 21st and 19th respectively.”
He continues, “This could indicate that these skills are now considered foundational and may not be explicitly mentioned in job listings. Alternatively, it might suggest a gap between industry practices and job market demands that needs addressing.”
Choudhary advises tech professionals to stay adaptable: “The tech landscape is constantly evolving. While developing expertise in high-demand areas like Python and SQL is crucial, it’s equally important to keep an eye on emerging trends and be ready to upskill accordingly.”
As companies continue to digitize and automate their operations, the demand for tech skills is likely to grow further. Finoit’s study provides valuable insights for both job seekers looking to enhance their employability and companies seeking to build robust tech teams.
