Goa, 17th July 2025: Doctors at Nanavati Max Super Speciality Hospital, Mumbai, today organised a public awareness session to highlight the importance of awareness, timely diagnosis, and treatment of liver-related ailments. The session also showcased the remarkable journey of two patients from Goa, 47-year-old Gregg Furtado, and 57-year-old Jayendra Naik, who successfully underwent liver transplant and are now leading a healthy life.

The session was led by Dr Gaurav Chaubal, Director – Liver and Multi-Organ Transplant, Nanavati Max Institute of Liver, Intestine & Pancreas Sciences, Nanavati Max Super Specialty Hospital.

Detailed investigations at a local hospital confirmed Chronic Liver Cirrhosis. His condition gradually worsened as he continued treatment at local centers and delayed seeking expert care. He was brought to Nanavati Max Super Speciality Hospital, Mumbai, while searching for liver expert care in Mumbai. Further diagnosis suggested Liver Transplant surgery, and it was performed with cadaveric organ donation. The patient made a remarkable recovery and was discharged within 14 days.”

Similarly, 57-year-old Jayendra Naik, a resident of Madgaon, had been battling with persistent fatigue, leg swelling, and bleeding in veins that triggered anaemia for the past few months. Despite taking treatments at several local healthcare centers and showing no sign of relief, the patient arrived at Nanavati Max Hospital, Mumbai. He had been referred by a gastroenterologist from Goa to consult Dr Gaurav Chaubal for expert advice and further treatment. Given the patient’s condition and basis the diagnosis, a living donor liver transplant was planned. Mr. Naik’s wife volunteered to donate a portion of her liver. Post-surgery, the donor and recipient made a good recovery and were discharged within 10 days.”

Further, Dr Chaubal said, “Delayed diagnosis and limited awareness are quite common. Over 60% of such patients present with late-stage cirrhosis or complications that simple tests could have detected months earlier. Thus, through this opportunity, I would like to sensitize the public about timely diagnosis, increased awareness about the early symptoms of liver ailments, before they deteriorate into emergency cases. This successful transplant further reinforces Nanavati Max Super Speciality Hospital’s leadership in complex liver disease management and transplant excellence.”
