OneTag Lets FASTag Users Switch Banks Without Changing Their Vehicle Tag
NHAI adds FASTag portability to Rajmargyatra app, making digital toll management easier for millions of highway users

New Delhi: FASTag users now have a simpler way to change their issuing bank without going through the trouble of replacing the physical tag attached to their vehicle. The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has introduced the ‘OneTag’ FASTag portability service on its Rajmargyatra mobile application.
The new facility allows motorists to retain their existing FASTag while moving their account from one issuer to another. This means a vehicle owner does not need to remove the old tag and obtain a fresh one merely because they want to change the issuing bank.
The facility adds to the growing range of highway services available through the Rajmargyatra app, including the FASTag Annual Pass, FASTag Local Pass and the National Highway emergency helpline 1033.
For motorists, the process is designed to be completed digitally. Users can open the Rajmargyatra app, enter their vehicle registration number and check whether their FASTag is eligible for portability.
The existing issuer bank will then send a six-digit Mobile Verification Code (MVC) to authenticate the request. After completing the verification, the user can select a new issuer and finish the required customer verification and wallet onboarding process.
Once the transfer is completed, the FASTag ID linked to the vehicle registration number remains unchanged. The physical tag already fixed to the vehicle can therefore continue to be used with the new issuer.
The previous issuer will close the existing FASTag wallet and refund the available balance after applicable adjustments. Users should therefore check their wallet balance and any applicable conditions before completing the transfer.
NHAI has also introduced a six-month cooling period before an interoperable FASTag can be ported again. This means users cannot repeatedly switch issuers within a short period.
A more convenient experience for motorists
The facility could be particularly useful for people who frequently travel on National Highways and depend on FASTag for regular toll payments. Changing service providers no longer necessarily means dealing with a new physical tag, its delivery and the process of attaching it to the vehicle.
For users, the biggest practical benefit is reduced hassle. The existing tag stays with the vehicle, while the associated service provider can be changed through the digital process.
The facility also gives customers greater flexibility when choosing a FASTag issuer. Users who want to move to another participating issuer can do so without starting the physical tag process again.
Lower duplication and operational costs
The portability system is also expected to reduce the repeated production and distribution of physical FASTags.
When a customer changes an issuer, retaining the existing tag can reduce the need for a replacement tag to be manufactured, dispatched and activated. This can lower operational and reissuance costs while making FASTag management more efficient.
The move also supports a more interoperable digital tolling ecosystem in which the physical tag remains connected to the vehicle even when the issuer changes.
Rajmargyatra becomes a wider highway service platform
The addition of OneTag further expands the role of the Rajmargyatra app as a single digital platform for highway users.
Along with FASTag portability, the app provides access to services such as Annual Pass and Local Pass facilities and the 1033 emergency helpline. Bringing more highway-related services into one platform can make it easier for motorists to manage their journeys digitally.
FASTag already has more than 98 per cent penetration, with around 13 crore users across the country. With such a large user base, even a small improvement in account management can have a wide impact.
For everyday motorists, the change is straightforward: the bank can change, but the FASTag on the vehicle can stay the same.
The OneTag service therefore adds another layer of convenience to India’s digital tolling system while helping NHAI reduce unnecessary physical tag replacement and streamline FASTag management for highway users.
