Is Your Health Insurance Monsoon-Ready What to Check Before the Season Peaks

By Ms. Sarita Joshi – Head of Health and Life Insurance, Probus

Monsoon season brings cool weather and green surroundings; but at the same time it also brings a spike in seasonal illnesses like dengue, malaria, typhoid, and viral flu. Hospital visits and medical bills tend to rise during this time. This is why it becomes even more important for families to ensure their health plan is ready for the rainy season.

Furthermore, one must check following points in health plan before the monsoon peaks:

Check if your plan covers diseases like dengue or malaria since some basic plans may not include these. If not covered, you can consider buying an add-on or a disease-specific plan that does.

Some policies come with caps on room rent or specific disease-wise limits. During the monsoon, hospital admissions rise, and even a short stay can become expensive. Ensure your policy does not limit your claim just because you opted for a slightly higher room category.

In case of an emergency, finding the nearest cashless hospital is important. Make sure you are aware of the nearest network hospitals under your insurer. Save the list on your phone or keep the helpline number handy.

Seasonal illnesses often require diagnostic tests, follow-ups, and medications even after discharge. Check whether your policy covers before and after hospitalisation expenses for at least 30 days before and 60 days after.

If you are buying a new plan during monsoon, remember that some illnesses may have a 30-day waiting period (except accidents). So, do not wait till you fall sick.

With rising medical costs, a ₹5 lakh cover may not always be sufficient for a family. Check if your family’s needs and upgrade your sum insured or opt for a top-up plan as necessary.

Being monsoon ready isn’t just about carrying umbrellas and raincoats; it’s also about making sure your insurance plan acts like a safety protection during the unpredictable seasons.
