Discover Sharklife at SEA LIFE Melbourne Aquarium

SLMA Ocean Tunnel (19)

Melbourne: It’s time to Discover Sharklife at SEA LIFE Melbourne Aquarium! During the winter school holidays guests will have the opportunity to sink their teeth into the world of these magnificent but often-misunderstood sea creatures.

From 26 June – 11 July, visitors can discover all there is to know about the 10 different shark species at the Aquarium through a range of activities focusing on myth-busting, conservation and fun facts!
Kids will receive a Discover Sharklife activity booklet on arrival and can take part in a number of interactive activities as they venture below the surface to get up close with a leopard shark, speartooth sharks, tawny nurse sharks, and more.

Endangered species wild Zebra Leopard Shark (Stegostoma fasciatum) swimming
This Zebra/Leopard Shark (Stegostoma fasciatum) image was captured whilst scuba diving in the Andaman Sea, Krabi, Thailand. Leopard sharks are a type of Elasmobranch and are more commonly known as Zebra sharks. They are gentle, mainly nocturnal creatures. They hunt at night for molluscs, crustaceans, small bony fishes, and sea snakes. Leopard Sharks have recently been re-classified from ‘Vulnerable to Extinction’ to ‘Endangered Species’ on the IUCN red list. This is due to being hunted for their meat and liver oil. Although their numbers are declining at a rapid rate, they are not yet a protected species. This image shows their natural behaviour in the wild, as it swims over the coral reef. Taken on Sony mirrorless camera with underwater housing and Inon Z330 strobe.

Each day of the school holidays, one of SEA LIFE Melbourne’s resident shark experts will be chatting with guests about all things shark-related from 11:30am and 1:30pm. The experts will be on hand to answer questions, showcase their scuba diving gear and educate people about these incredible sea creatures.

Visitors aged 14+ can take their jawsome day out to the next level, by venturing into the water for SEA LIFE Melbourne’s exhilarating Shark Dive Xtreme experience. The cageless diving adventure is available to people with zero diving experience and guarantees an underwater encounter with sharks!

Discover Sharklife is a celebration of sharks and the essential role they play in our ecosystem. SEA LIFE Melbourne wants to give people the opportunity to learn more about these marine creatures, which are often misunderstood, and are under threat from overfishing, the demand for shark products and habitat destruction.

SEA LIFE Melbourne is open 7 days per week during the Victorian school holidays. All visitors must pre-book their tickets online in advance.
