1. Turning Adversity into Strength: Facing Bullying in a Foreign Land: “I was tired of being called names, having vile things written about me in the bathroom stalls, and getting shoved against lockers and buses.”
Navigating a new environment as a teenager, especially from a contrasting cultural background comes with its own share of emotional hurdles. Priyanka Chopra faced these head-on, confronting racism and exclusion with quiet determination. Recalling her experience in a Massachusetts school, she shares, “As much as I tried to manage the bullying situation and avoid direct conflict with Jenny and her friends, things eventually escalated. I was tired of being called names, having vile things written about me in the bathroom stalls, and getting shoved against lockers and buses. I’d spoken to my guidance counselor.” Even as the outcome remained uncertain, her story reflects strength in seeking help and standing up for herself.
2. Finding a Partner Who Champions Her Ambition: “I’m not going to ask you to stay,” he told me. “Not because I don’t want you to, but because if you could cancel, you’d have done it already.”
In a world where women are often put in the dilemma of having to choose between love and ambition, Priyanka found her now-husband Nick Jonas, someone who supported her drive without hesitation. Recalling a defining moment in their relationship, she shared one of his remarks, “I’m not going to ask you to stay,” he told me. “Not because I don’t want you to, but because if you could cancel, you’d have done it already.” Then he took my hands. “I’ll never be that guy, Pri. You’ve worked so hard for so many years to be where you are, and you know what’s best for your career. And I will never stand in your way.” It was a moment that left Priyanka with the realisation she had found “the one” for her.
3. Rediscovering America: Entering Hollywood on Her Terms: “When I’d started in the film industry, I’d had no idea what I was doing when I first walked onto a set, and so I’d had to learn everything on the job. Now, I knew my craft, but I had to get reacquainted with the culture”
Before conquering the Hollywood movie industry, winning hearts with Quantico and finding her space in English music with hits like In My City and Exotic, Priyanka Chopra found herself navigating a changed cultural landscape. She shares, “When I’d started in the film industry, I’d had no idea what I was doing when I first walked onto a set, and so I’d had to learn everything on the job. Now, I knew my craft, but I had to get reacquainted with the culture. I’d last lived in the U.S. in 1998 as a teenager. America and I had both evolved since then, and when we met again, we were strangers. Getting to know each other took a little time, not only outside the studio but in it, as well.” Her words reflect her constant drive to learn and grow.
4. Owning Her Identity: From Feeling ‘Other’ to Making Space for Herself: “The doors had been flung wide open on to an open-forum display of hostility directed at one person- me- for something I could not change: my ethnicity”
Moving to America made Priyanka confront her cultural identity in a new and painful way. Reflecting on her heightened sense of difference as she entered the American education system, she shares: “I was acutely aware of my status as Other. But it wasn’t so much that other students considered me Other. It was that I did; I had been more aware of my ethnicity than when I left my own country and moved to America.”
5. Resilience in Grief: Silently Grappling with Loss: “I never really examined or dealt with my grief. Instead, I tried to power through. I was doing my best to be resilient, but the fact is that I was burying my grief rather than coming to terms with it”
The passing of her father, Capt. Dr. Ashok Chopra, left a profound void in Priyanka’s life. Yet, even in grief, she sought ways to keep moving forward. Reflecting on that period, she shares “Beyond those few conversations with my family, though, I never really examined or dealt with my grief. Instead, I tried to power through. I was doing my best to be resilient, but the fact is that I was burying my grief rather than coming to terms with it. I moved from one extreme to another, like a pendulum, always in motion, always swinging. Either I was working long hours, moving fast, traveling, not giving myself time to think, or I was completely inside myself, shut down, uninterested in seeing friends or seeking company.” This is a reminder for all us that healing is not always linear, but choosing to carry on with purpose is in itself a form of strength.
