Aster MIMS to Become State’s Largest Solar-Powered Hospital

Calicut, March 20, 2024: Aster MIMS Calicut is poised to become the largest solar-powered hospital in the state of Kerala. The hospital has completed the setup of a massive solar plant with a capacity of 10 megawatts in Kasargod district on land allotted by the state government. he 6.5 MW capacity can be utilized for full-time operations of Kozhikode Aster MIMS while the surplus will benefit Aster MIMS in Kannur. Starting April 1st, this expansive solar facility will commence electricity generation.

This groundbreaking initiative marks the first instance of a hospital chain in Kerala harnessing solar energy on such a large scale. Dr. Azad Moopen, Founder Chairman of Aster, has mandated that the institution serve as a healthcare model for environmental preservation and climate change mitigation. Implemented as part of the broader initiative, Aster Green Choices aims to drastically reduce carbon emissions linked to hospital operations. Upon completion, Aster will join the ranks of select hospital chains in India capable of generating substantial electricity through sustainable means.

In efforts to boost solar energy production, the state government is extending comprehensive support, including the allocation of required land in Kasargod district.

In collaboration with Usolar Assetco Two Pvt. Ltd., a leading provider of commercial solar solutions, Aster MIMS has swiftly executed this eco-friendly venture. The agreement between the two entities was formalized by K.R. Harinarayanan, Director of Usolar Assetco Two Pvt Ltd, and Lukman Ponmadhath, Chief Operating Officer at Aster MIMS.

“This initiative is just one of many steps taken by the Aster Group towards sustainability, with more similar projects planned for the future, said Lukman Ponmadhath, Chief Operating Officer at Aster MIMS. Liju. M, Head of Project at Aster India Engineering and Projects Departments, played a crucial role in prioritizing and executing these initiatives in a timely manner.

Under the Aster Green Choices program, the hospital aims to utilize natural resources responsibly, ensuring that electricity and water usage are sourced sustainably. Measures will be implemented to minimize paper usage for office purposes and eliminate non-reusable plastic products within the hospitals. Waste disposal practices will be optimized for environmental friendliness, and support will be extended to sustainability initiatives within the medical community.
