After Road Safety, Rajya Sabha MP Dr. Ashok Kumar Mittal Seeks Answers On Impact of Inflation on Affordable Housing

New Delhi, July 29th, 2025: Aam Aadmi Party Rajya Sabha MP and Founder-Chancellor of Lovely Professional University, DrAshok Kumar Mittal carrying forward his commitment to raise people-centric issues sought clear answers from the Union Government on the inflationary pressures affecting India’s affordable housing sector.
In an opportunity via a starred question during the Monsoon Session today, DrMittal asked the Union Housing and Urban Affairs Ministry about rising housing prices, the impact of interest rate cuts on affordability, why developers are exiting affordable projects, and what measures exist to lower land costs and support first-time homebuyers.
Replying to DrMittal‘s targeted questions, the Union Housing and Urban Affairs Minister Shri Manohar Lal acknowledged that the Centre does not maintain data on housing prices or rent trends, despite concerns over affordability rising nationwide. Interestingly, while the Housing Price Index has grown 5.3% annually since 2018, key support measures like tax exemptions and concessional GST rates have expired by 2022.
Underscoring the importance of affordable housing DrMittal remarked, “For every middle-class and low-income family, owning a home is not just a dream, it’s a symbol of stability and dignity. That is why as a policymaker, I want to ensure that affordable housing policies must reflect this aspiration of the aam aadmi.”
DrMittal has also been actively raising issues that directly impact the daily lives of citizens since the beginning of the session. He highlighted concerns around Section 4, noting its potential implications for small-scale exporters and urging thoughtful revisions to safeguard their interests.
These interventions also follow his recent question to the Road Transport Ministry on highway ambulance response time as well as his concerns over aviation safety raised earlier in the session.
DrMittal reiterates, ‘As parliamentarians, it is our responsibility to speak up for the aam aadmi, for the working-class families whose dreams form the foundation of a developed India. Parliament must debate and resolve structural flaws.”
