Tamil Nadu Launches Mega EV Skill Drive to Train 22,500 Automobile Mechanics

Chennai, Aug 6: The Tamil Nadu government has launched a large-scale skill development initiative to train 22,500 automobile mechanics in electric vehicle (EV) servicing and maintenance, reinforcing the state’s commitment to building a future-ready workforce for the fast-growing EV industry.

The programme is designed to equip mechanics with specialised skills in EV diagnostics, battery management, repair techniques, safety standards and advanced vehicle systems, enabling them to meet the evolving needs of the automotive sector.

As electric mobility gathers pace across India, the initiative seeks to bridge the widening skill gap in EV servicing while helping conventional automobile technicians transition to emerging technologies. It is also expected to create new employment opportunities and strengthen after-sales service infrastructure across the state.

The training programme will be implemented in partnership with industry players and accredited training institutions, with participants receiving hands-on instruction that aligns with current industry requirements and technological advancements.

Tamil Nadu, one of India’s leading automotive and electric vehicle manufacturing hubs, has been actively expanding its EV ecosystem through policy support, infrastructure development and workforce upskilling.
