KAFILA: A Jhangi Family’s Partition Memoir Launches on the Eve of Partition Horrors Remembrance Day
New Delhi, August 14th, 2025: Om Books International proudly announced the release of Kafila: A Jhangi Family’s Partition Memoir by renowned lawyer, author, and cultural advocate Sumant Batra. The book was launched on the eve of Partition Horrors Remembrance Day at Desire, Hotel Le Meridien, Windsor Place, Janpath, New Delhi.
The event was graced by Thakur Das Miglani ji, a 93-year-old Partition survivor who migrated from Jhang in 1947 alongside the Batra family, making the occasion even more poignant.
In Kafila, Sumant Batra chronicles the journey of his ancestors the Dass family from Rodu Sultan, Jhang as they were uprooted from their homeland amidst the chaos of Partition. Blending intimate family stories with the larger political backdrop of the time, the book captures both the harrowing details of displacement and the enduring spirit of resilience that defined the survivors.
“Though this is my family’s story, it is also the story of millions who endured Partition,” said Sumant Batra at the launch. “I wanted to honour their memories and resilience while urging today’s generation to provide the closure that history has long denied.”
Ajay Mago, Publisher, Om Books International, remarked: “Kafila is not just a memoir; it is a living document of courage, survival, and hope. It preserves a slice of history that is at risk of fading away.”
Shantanu Ray Chaudhuri, Editor, added: “In Kafila, Sumant bridges meticulous historical research with the emotional truth of lived experience, creating a narrative that lingers long after the last page.”
Reflecting on the occasion, Thakur Das Miglani ji, Chief Guest, said: “I lived this journey. It’s important that the younger generation knows what was lost, what was endured, and what was rebuilt.”
