Youth Receives New Lease on Life After Rare Limb Salvage Surgery

Groundbreaking Limb Salvage Surgery Restores Mobility to Young PatientThiruvananthapuram: A 26-year-old man from Kollam, who faced the imminent risk of losing his leg after a severe accident, has had his foot successfully reattached and reconstructed, thanks to the medical expertise at SP Medifort Hospital. The rare and complex multi-stage surgical procedure was performed under the leadership of Dr. Sreelal Sreedharan, Senior Consultant in Plastic Surgery, and Dr. Aathithya, Orthopaedic Surgeon and Executive Director of SP Medifort.

The accident left the patient, Yoosuf, with a completely severed foot. The initial surgery involved reattaching the foot using an external fixator to stabilise the bones, followed by intricate nerve and artery grafting sourced from the patient’s right leg. “This case demanded a multidisciplinary approach and extraordinary precision. Our goal was not just to save the limb but to restore its function and improve the patient’s quality of life,” said Dr. Sreelal.

In the second stage, a microvascular flap surgery was carried out to ensure blood circulation in the injured foot. Flesh and skin from the patient’s right leg were transferred to the left, accompanied by extensive tissue reconstruction. Additional procedures, including the placement of steel plates, are planned for the coming months to enhance stability and mobility.

Dr. Aathithya remarked, “This case demonstrates our hospital’s advanced capabilities in handling rare and challenging trauma cases. We are optimistic that Yoosuf will regain full functionality and sensation in his foot within six months.”

Adding to the hospital’s commitment to excellence, Adwaith A. Bala, Executive Director of SP Medifort, said, “At SP Medifort, we strive to provide high-quality care to every patient in need. This case is a testament to our dedication to advancing medical care and offering hope to patients facing critical challenges.”

Yoosuf’s remarkable recovery highlights the critical role of advanced surgical techniques in saving lives and limbs. Expected to walk independently within months, his story exemplifies the resilience of the human spirit and the transformative power of modern medicine.
